How to Get to Mullingar#
Mullingar is served by its own Iarnród Éireann station on the Dublin-Sligo line and is easiest to reach by train from Dublin. For air arrivals use Dublin Airport (DUB) and continue by coach or rail into the town.
Dublin Airport (DUB): From Dublin Airport you can reach Mullingar by transferring into Dublin city and taking an Iarnród Éireann train from Dublin Connolly to Mullingar (see train card). Aircoach or local buses link the airport with the city centre; expect the transfer to central Dublin to take 25-40 minutes and cost around €8-€10 for Aircoach singles. A taxi direct from Dublin Airport to Mullingar typically takes about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic and costs roughly €90-€120.
Ireland West Airport Knock (NOC): Knock is farther west and can be useful if you arrive there. From Knock you can take a taxi (about 45-60 minutes to Mullingar) or combine a local bus to a larger hub then rail; expect taxi costs in the region of €60-€90 and travel times around 45-75 minutes depending on routing.
Train: Mullingar railway station is on the Iarnród Éireann Dublin-Sligo line (Dublin Connolly ↔ Mullingar). Typical journey time from Dublin is about 1h10-1h30 depending on the service; single fares to/from Dublin are commonly in the ~€9-€15 range (off-peak and advance fares vary).
Bus: Local bus links are provided by Bus Éireann and Local Link Westmeath connecting Mullingar with nearby towns and villages and with longer-distance coach services to Dublin and other regional centres. Short local fares are typically low (a few euros) while intercity coach fares depend on distance and operator.
How to Get Around Mullingar#
Mullingar is easiest to access by rail from Dublin; once in town the best ways to get around are on foot, by local bus, taxi or a rented car for exploring the surrounding countryside. Trains and regional buses are the backbone for most visitors.
- Iarnród Éireann (regional train) (€9-€15) - Mullingar station is on the Dublin-Sligo line with regular services to Dublin Connolly and intermediate towns. Trains are reliable for day trips and commuters; expect about 1h10-1h30 to Dublin and bring a printout or buy tickets on the app to avoid queues. Off-peak fares are cheaper - check Iarnród Éireann for exact prices.
- Bus Éireann / Local Link (€2-€15) - Bus Éireann and Local Link provide regional and local services linking Mullingar to villages and larger towns. Buses are useful for places not served directly by rail; ticketing is cash or app depending on the service. Timetables can be sparse on Sundays so check schedules in advance.
- Taxi (€10-€120) - Taxis are the fastest door-to-door option, useful for airport transfers or getting to rural addresses outside the town. Expect rates based on distance and time of day; pre-booking for early/late services is recommended. For airport runs from Dublin, confirm a fixed fare with the driver or company.
- Car (rental) (€30-€70/day) - Renting a car gives maximum flexibility to explore Westmeath and the midlands; roads are well maintained and signposted. Parking in Mullingar town centre is available but can be busy during market days - check paid parking zones. A car is handy for visiting loughs and dispersed heritage sites.
- Cycling (€0-€20/day) - Mullingar is compact and relatively cycle-friendly with quiet roads and some off-road trails nearby. Bike hire is seasonal and less common than in larger Irish towns, so bring your own if you plan extensive cycling. Use caution on country roads where visibility can be limited.
- Walking - The town centre is very walkable; most shops, cafes and attractions are within easy walking distance. Walking is the best way to explore the immediate town and park areas; wear comfortable shoes for uneven pavements and market surfaces.
