Muiderslot

Muiderslot is a late medieval castle at Muiden in North Holland, originally constructed in the late 13th century by Count Floris V and now preserved as a museum. It is one of the Netherlands’ best-known medieval castles and retains much of its historic defensive profile including a moat and curtain walls.

The site includes a keep (donjon), great hall spaces and period rooms that have been furnished to illustrate castle life in later centuries; the exterior features a moat, gatehouse and decorated facades. The castle hosts exhibitions and public events and is set up for visitor circulation with interpretive displays.

The castle was established in the late 1200s as a fortified residence and river-defence point, and over the centuries it was altered and restored; in modern times it functions as a state-owned museum preserving the site and its collections. Restoration and museum development in the 20th century shaped the present appearance and visitor facilities.

Muiderslot stands at the mouth of the river Vecht near the IJmeer, in the town of Muiden, roughly east of Amsterdam and easily reached by road or public transport from the capital.
