Mount Yasur

Mount Yasur is an active basaltic volcano on Tanna Island in Vanuatu’s Tafea Province, known for persistent Strombolian activity and regular explosive bursts. It is a major natural attraction on Tanna because its eruptions are often visible at close range from the crater rim.

The volcano’s frequent, moderate eruptions produce incandescent lava projections, booming explosions and ash emissions that visitors commonly view from designated vantage points. Local guides and authorities regulate access to the crater rim and operate day and night visits when conditions permit.

White explorers and naturalists recorded Yasur’s activity in the 18th century, and it has been a continuous feature of local life and travel since; its persistent activity has made it a focus of both scientific observation and cultural significance for Tanna.

Mount Yasur sits on the eastern part of Tanna Island in southern Vanuatu, rising from lowland terrain and reachable by road from island settlements such as Lenakel.
