Mount Wellington, officially dual-named kunanyi / Mount Wellington, is a 1,271 meter mountain immediately west of the city of Hobart in Tasmania and forms the skyline above the city. It is the principal high point overlooking Hobart and the River Derwent.

The summit and upper slopes offer a network of sealed roads and walking tracks, short 10- to 60-minute walks to lookout points, and panoramic views across Hobart and the surrounding landscape. Rock outcrops and dolerite formations are visible on the upper flanks and the summit area is a popular destination for day trips and photography.

The mountain has a long recorded history in European and Palawa narratives and carries the dual name kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Over time roads and recreational facilities were added to provide public access to the summit and to formalize walking and cycling routes.

The mountain sits immediately west of Hobart in southern Tasmania; the summit is reached by a road that rises from the city suburbs. The slopes are a mix of rocky outcrops, forested gullies and managed recreation areas.

• Weather and clothing: Snow commonly falls on the summit in winter and can close the summit road; parts of the mountain may be windy and cold year round, so warm clothing is recommended.
• Access and parking: A sealed road provides motor vehicle access to near the summit from Hobart; roadside parking and short trailheads are available at several points on the mountain.

What to See#

• Summit (Pinnacle): The summit area includes the Pinnacle viewpoint and a small visitor shelter; the summit reaches 1,271 meters and provides panoramic views over Hobart and the River Derwent on clear days.
• The Springs: The Springs is a lower carpark and recreation area on the mountain’s eastern slopes that serves as a common starting point for short walks and access to picnic facilities and mountain bike trails.

From central Hobart take the Pinnacle Road to the summit car park (about 20-30 minutes by car). There are also walking tracks from the Fern Tree area and local bus services that operate to the lower visitor areas.

• Drive or take the Metro bus to the Springs area and then the Pinnacle Road to the summit precinct for the quickest access.
• Visit early morning or late afternoon for clearer skies and to avoid peak tourist buses.
• Check local park or city sites for closures during heavy snow or extreme weather - the mountain can be blanketed quickly.
