Main image

Monte Ulia is a coastal hill and greenbelt area immediately east of Donostia-San Sebastián in Spain’s Basque Country. It forms a wooded promontory with cliffs and viewpoints overlooking the Bay of Biscay.

Trails and promenades across the hill provide seaside walking routes and lookout points over the harbour and coastline. The area is used for short walks, coastal observation and local recreation rather than high-altitude mountaineering.

Monte Ulia sits within the city limits of San Sebastián and links urban neighbourhoods to coastal cliffs and beaches; it is part of the city’s network of seaside promenades and natural viewpoints.

  • Urban access: A compact network of coastal walking paths and viewpoints link the hill to San Sebastián's seaside districts, making it a short urban nature outing from the city centre.

How to Get to Mount Ulia #

Mount Ulia sits on the eastern edge of San Sebastián (Donostia) along the coastal path. From the Old Town (Parte Vieja) or the Gros/La Concha beachfront it is a straightforward walk following the Paseo de Ulia/coastal promenade; expect about 20-30 minutes on foot from the city centre to reach the main viewpoints and trailheads.

Local city buses also serve stops near the base of Ulia-get off at the nearest coastal/Gros stops and follow the signed footpaths up the hill. The trails are well marked and the summit area is reached on foot from the nearest parking or bus stops.

Tips for Visiting Mount Ulia #

  • Approach Mount Ulia on foot from San Sebastián's city center by following the coastal path east - the clifftop trails link directly to the city and are quieter early in the morning.
  • Visit at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light on the cliffs and to avoid the midday strolls from nearby beaches, then continue along the coastal ridge for uninterrupted views of the bay.
  • Walk beyond the main viewpoint: the network of smaller paths and old military batteries along Ulia's seaward face are often overlooked and reward you with quieter panoramas of the coastline.
