Mount Tomanivi
Mountain Fiji's highest mountain and central highland
Highest point on Fiji’s Viti Levu, reached via rainforest tracks that pass endemic birds and remote villages. Hikers come for cloud‑forest scenery, cooler temperatures and views toward the island’s coasts.
Mount Tomanivi (formerly Mount Victoria) is the highest peak in Fiji, rising to about 1,324 meters on the island of Viti Levu. It forms the central highland of the island and is an ecological stronghold for native forest species.
Trails lead through lower rainforest to upland cloud forest, with habitat important for endemic birds and plants and used by guided hikers. The mountain’s slopes have historically been less developed than coastal lowlands, preserving large tracts of native vegetation.
Tomanivi is a volcanic highland formed by island-building processes and long-term erosion, and it remains a focus for conservation and eco-tourism on Viti Levu. Traditional land use and village access routes exist on the mountain’s lower flanks.
Located in western Viti Levu within Fiji’s Western Division, the peak is inland from coastal towns and reached via roads that cross the island’s interior; it dominates central topography of the island.
- Elevation: Highest point in Fiji at approximately 1,324 meters above sea level.
- Ecology: Vegetation includes montane rainforest and cloud forest, supporting endemic birds and plants.
Tips for Visiting Mount Tomanivi #
- Start very early in the day to avoid the island's frequent afternoon cloud and showers - summit views are much more likely in the morning when conditions clear.
- Organize a local guide or book through a reputable Fijian operator or lodge rather than trying to go unsupported; local guides know the routes, river crossings and the quickest lines through wet, slippery rainforest trails.
- Be prepared for muddy, rooty jungle trails and slow progress-allow extra time for the return and avoid planning tight onward connections from the trailhead.
