Mount Remarkable National Park

Mount Remarkable National Park is a protected area in the southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia centered on the Mount Remarkable massif near the town of Melrose. It is noted for rugged quartzite peaks and steep gorges that rise above surrounding plains.

The park offers a network of walking trails, rocky lookouts and sheltered valleys. Key natural highlights include sandstone and quartzite ridgelines, eucalypt woodlands and sheltered gorges such as Alligator Gorge, with opportunities for day walks and short overnight bush camping.

The land has long been used by Indigenous people of the region; more recently it has been managed by the South Australian government as a conservation reserve to protect native vegetation and wildlife. Management has focused on maintaining walking access while conserving remnant forest and gorge habitats.

The park sits in the southern Flinders Ranges near the town of Melrose in South Australia, roughly in the northern half of the state. The terrain is a marked rise from surrounding agricultural plains, providing prominent ridgelines that are visible for many kilometres.

• Best time to visit: Spring is the best time for wildflower displays and for cooler walking conditions on the higher ridgelines.
• Walking notes: Several short- to medium-length walking tracks provide access to viewpoints and gorges; some routes include steep sections and rocky steps.
