Mount Lofty is the main peak of the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, located within easy reach of the Adelaide metropolitan area. It is a well-known local landmark with a developed summit precinct and public lookout.
The summit precinct includes an observation platform with panoramic views over Adelaide city and Gulf St Vincent; on clear days the skyline and coast are visible across 15 to 20 kilometres. Nearby attractions include walking routes through forested gullies, wildlife areas and the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden.
The mountain was named by British explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802 during early European coastal surveys. Over time the site has been developed for public recreation with roads, a summit lookout and conservation reserves on the surrounding slopes.
Mount Lofty sits in the Adelaide Hills roughly 10 to 20 kilometres east-southeast of central Adelaide, within the Mount Lofty Ranges. The area is wooded with steep gullies and gardened public spaces around the summit.

How to Get to Mount Lofty #
Drive: Mount Lofty (Mount Lofty Summit, Adelaide Hills) is about 15 km southeast of Adelaide CBD. From the city follow Greenhill Road and then Mount Lofty Summit Road (signed) into Cleland Conservation Park; there is a summit car park with a short paved walk (about 5-10 minutes) to the lookout.
Public transport: there are regional buses and tour services that travel into the Adelaide Hills; if using public transit, travel to the Cleland/Mount Lofty area then expect a short taxi or shuttle from the nearest stop to the summit car park.
Tips for Visiting Mount Lofty #
- Visit Mount Lofty summit in the late afternoon for the best light over Adelaide (sunset is popular) but arrive earlier on weekends when the small summit car park fills quickly.
- Use the Mount Lofty Summit Road/Cleland Conservation Park access and park at the official summit precinct to avoid long uphill approaches from residential streets; the short walking loops around the summit precinct give panoramic views without a long hike.
- To avoid crowds, go during weekday mornings or combine a summit visit with quieter walking tracks lower in Cleland Conservation Park - people often stick to the main lookout and miss nearby native-bush trails and wildlife sightings.
