Mount Lofty is the main peak of the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, located within easy reach of the Adelaide metropolitan area. It is a well-known local landmark with a developed summit precinct and public lookout.

The summit precinct includes an observation platform with panoramic views over Adelaide city and Gulf St Vincent; on clear days the skyline and coast are visible across 15 to 20 kilometres. Nearby attractions include walking routes through forested gullies, wildlife areas and the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden.

The mountain was named by British explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802 during early European coastal surveys. Over time the site has been developed for public recreation with roads, a summit lookout and conservation reserves on the surrounding slopes.

Mount Lofty sits in the Adelaide Hills roughly 10 to 20 kilometres east-southeast of central Adelaide, within the Mount Lofty Ranges. The area is wooded with steep gullies and gardened public spaces around the summit.

  • Best viewing time: Best viewed in late afternoon and at sunset when the city of Adelaide and Gulf St Vincent are lit; weather can close in quickly on the summit.
  • Access and parking: Access via Summit Road from Adelaide, with a sealed road to the top and parking available at the summit precinct.

  • Cleland Conservation Park: Cleland Conservation Park occupies adjacent slopes and contains walking trails and wildlife areas with native species and forested gullies.
  • Mount Lofty Botanic Garden: Mount Lofty Botanic Garden lies to the south of the summit and contains cultivated gardens set in cool-climate, wooded terrain.

  • Use the Mount Lofty Summit Road/Cleland Conservation Park access and park at the official summit precinct to avoid long uphill approaches from residential streets; the short walking loops around the summit precinct give panoramic views without a long hike.
