Mount Kosciuszko
Mountain Australia's mainland highest peak and alpine plateau
Australia’s Mount Kosciuszko, the mainland’s highest peak inside Kosciuszko National Park, draws hikers and cross-country skiers to boardwalked summit routes, subalpine meadows and alpine walking trails.
Mount Kosciuszko is the highest mountain on the Australian mainland, rising to 2,228 metres in New South Wales. The peak sits within Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains.
A well-marked walking track leads to the summit from nearby trailheads and there is also lift-assisted access from the Thredbo resort that shortens the approach. The area supports alpine meadows in summer and ski and cross-country skiing activities in winter.
The mountain was named in 1840 by the explorer Paweł Edmund Strzelecki in honour of the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko. It has since been managed as part of the national park to protect the unique alpine environment.
Mount Kosciuszko lies in southeastern New South Wales within the Australian Alps, roughly several hundred kilometres southwest of Sydney and forming part of the Great Dividing Range.
- Elevation: The mountain's summit reaches 2,228 metres and is the highest point on the Australian mainland.
- Access options: Well-formed walking tracks lead to the summit and a chairlift at Thredbo provides easier access to the ridge for many visitors.
What to See #
- Summit: The peak at 2,228 metres that is the highest point on the Australian mainland and a common endpoint for walkers.
- Kosciuszko National Park: A protected area covering the Snowy Mountains known for alpine meadows, walking tracks and winter snowfields.
- Thredbo: A village and ski resort providing access to nearby trails and a chairlift that reduces the walking distance toward the summit.
How to Get to Mount Kosciuszko #
Drive into Kosciuszko National Park via the Monaro Highway (from Canberra) then follow Kosciuszko Road to access points such as Thredbo village or Charlotte Pass. Thredbo is the common base for the southern route and Charlotte Pass provides the shortest walking approach to the summit.
From Charlotte Pass the walk to Mount Kosciuszko’s summit is a short marked trail of roughly 6 km return; from Thredbo the standard walk is longer (around 13 km return) unless you use the Thredbo Kosciuszko Express chairlift to shorten the route. Major nearby cities: Canberra is about 200 km by road; Sydney is several hundred kilometres farther (driving via the Hume and Snowy Mountains routes).
Tips for Visiting Mount Kosciuszko #
- Visit in the Australian summer (December-February) when the walking path to the summit is usually clear; in summer use the Thredbo chairlift (Kosciuszko Express) to Rawson's Pass to shorten the climb and avoid the steep lower ascent.
- Start early on weekends and holidays-parking and chairlift queues peak late morning; an early departure from Thredbo village gives quieter boardwalk conditions on the approach to the summit.
- If you want a shorter, quieter route, approach from Charlotte Pass (the shorter walking route starts there) rather than driving to Thredbo-check seasonal access and any road notices before you go.
Best Time to Visit Mount Kosciuszko #
