Mount Hagen (volcano)
Mountain Extinct volcano dominating Western Highlands landscape
An eastern Papua New Guinea volcano above the Western Highlands, Mount Hagen gives context to the nearby city of Mount Hagen-used as a staging point for Highlands festivals, coffee country excursions and local treks.
Mount Hiko, often written Hiko-san, is a sacred mountain on the border area of Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures in Kyushu, Japan with an elevation near 1,200 metres. It has been a center for mountain worship and Shugendo ascetic practice for centuries.
The mountain contains shrine complexes and pilgrimage routes that lead to upper ridges and summit areas. Walks range from steep forest trails to more developed approaches that pass waterfalls and religious sites.
Historically the mountain has been used for religious training and pilgrimage rather than permanent habitation, and many of the shrines and routes have been maintained for long periods. Modern visitors come for both religious tourism and recreational hiking.
It lies in northern Kyushu and is accessible from nearby towns and transport hubs in Fukuoka Prefecture.
- Religious significance: Long-established as a sacred mountain and training ground for Shugendo practitioners, retaining a network of historic pilgrimage routes.
- Height and terrain: Summit elevation about 1,200 metres, with steep trails and several waterfalls on the lower slopes that are used as part of ascetic practices.
What to See #
- Hikosan shrine complex: Multiple small summit shrines and mountain religious sites associated with Shugendo and local pilgrimage practices, clustered around the upper ridges and approaches.
