Mount Buffalo National Park
Park Alpine national park with granite plateau and cliffs
Granite plateau in Victoria offering walking tracks, rock climbing, waterfalls, alpine meadows and camping; seasonal snow attracts cross‑country skiers and photographers.
Mount Buffalo National Park is a protected alpine and subalpine area in Victoria, Australia, proclaimed in the late 19th century to conserve its distinctive granite plateau and high-country ecosystems. The park is notable for its granite escarpments and accessible alpine features.
The park’s mesa-like granite plateau rises to about 1,723 m at the highest summit and includes lookouts, short to medium-length walks and a small recreational lake with camping. Key attractions include granite tors, cliffs and waterfalls, plus a network of walking trails that serve a wide range of abilities. Seasonal snow transforms parts of the park in winter, while summer attracts bushwalkers and rock climbers.
Protection was established to conserve the plateau’s geological features and alpine flora and fauna; over time the area has been developed with picnic areas, campgrounds and marked walking tracks for day and overnight visitors. Management has balanced recreation with conservation of sensitive alpine vegetation.
The park sits on the Buffalo plateau in northeastern Victoria, within driving distance of the alpine valleys and towns of the region and roughly several hours’ drive northeast of Melbourne. Access is via sealed roads that lead up onto the plateau and to key visitor facilities.
- Summit elevation: The Horn reaches 1,723 m above sea level, making it the park's highest accessible viewpoint.
- Winter conditions: Snow commonly falls on the plateau in winter, creating opportunities for cross-country skiing and winter walking on cleared trails.
What to See #
- The Horn: A granite summit reaching 1,723 m, accessible by a steep walking track with panoramic views over the plateau and surrounding ranges.

- Big Gorge / escarpments: A series of cliffs and viewing platforms formed in the granite escarpment, popular for short walks and photography of the plateau edges.
- Eurobin Falls: A waterfall on the Eurobin Creek with a short, well-formed walking track and viewing points downstream from the plateau.
