Mount Barney National Park
Park National park centered on twin peaks and wilderness
Twin‑peaked national park in Queensland favoured by bushwalkers and rock climbers; trails lead to cliffs, rainforest gullies and camping spots.
Mount Barney National Park is a protected area in southeast Queensland within the Scenic Rim region that protects the rugged Mount Barney massif. The park is centred on steep granite and metamorphic peaks that rise sharply above surrounding lowlands.
The park is used for bushwalking, scrambling and technical climbing; the massif contains two principal summits commonly called the East Peak and the West Peak. Trails lead into rainforest gullies and up ridgelines but summit routes involve steep, rocky sections and route-finding rather than easy walk-in summits.
The park was created to conserve the distinctive mountain terrain and remnant ecosystems of the Scenic Rim. Over time it has become established as a regional destination for experienced walkers and climbers.
The park sits in the Scenic Rim of southern Queensland close to the New South Wales border. It is characterised by steep slopes, rainforest pockets and exposed cliff faces within a largely rural and forested landscape.
- Route difficulty: Tracks to the main summits include steep, rough sections and route-finding; many routes require scrambling and good fitness rather than simple walking tracks.
- Weather and access: Access is seasonal and conditions can become hazardous after heavy rain; check local park alerts before attempting longer routes.
What to See #
- Mount Barney peaks: The park contains the Mount Barney massif, which includes two main summits commonly referred to as the East Peak and the West Peak; both are rugged, steep peaks forming the core of the protected area.
- Rainforest gullies and ridgelines: Lower-elevation rainforest gullies and ridgelines within the park provide a contrast to the bare cliffs of the summits and contain the main access trails used by day walkers and scramblers.
