Mota Lava is a volcanic island in the Banks Islands group of northern Vanuatu, administratively in Torba Province. It is an inhabited island with villages and subsistence agriculture.
Settlements are small and coastal, with communities engaged in gardening, fishing and local trade; the island offers volcanic landscapes, beaches and traditional village life rather than mainstream tourist infrastructure. Visitors encounter local languages and customary practices that remain active in daily life.
In the late 19th century the island and the related Mota language became important to Anglican missionary activity in northern Vanuatu, and Mota was used widely as a lingua franca for mission work and liturgy. The island has continued as a settled, chiefly rural community since contact periods.
Mota Lava lies in the Banks Islands of northern Vanuatu, in Torba Province, north of the larger islands of Vanuatu’s archipelago.
