The Mosque of Rome (Grande Moschea di Roma) is the largest mosque in Italy and one of the largest in Western Europe, inaugurated in 1995. It was designed by Italian architect Paolo Portoghesi and combines traditional Islamic forms with contemporary architectural elements.
The complex includes a spacious columned prayer hall, a prominent minaret, landscaped courtyards and attached cultural facilities such as a library and conference spaces that host exhibitions and community events. Planning and construction brought together international and local Muslim communities and Italian institutions; the building opened as a purpose-built national mosque and cultural center in the mid-1990s. Since opening it has been a focal point for religious life and intercultural dialogue in Rome.
The mosque is located in the northern part of Rome, within the city’s urban area and accessible from central Rome by public transport; it lies east of the main historic center.
