The Morvan is a compact highland area in central-eastern France, commonly described as a granitic massif within the historical region of Burgundy. It is characterised by rounded, forested hills, small reservoirs and rural settlements rather than high alpine relief.

Outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and lake recreation are the main attractions; marked trails cross the massif and there are several small lakes and viewpoints. The landscape is lower and more wooded than France’s major mountain ranges, making it a regional nature and recreation area.

Geologically the Morvan is a granitic uplift that has been farmed and settled for centuries; archaeological sites including the oppidum at Mont Beuvray record a long human presence. Modern conservation and rural tourism developed in the 20th century to protect landscapes and support local economies.

The area lies roughly in the centre of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, spanning parts of Nièvre, Côte-d’Or, Saône-et-Loire and Yonne departments; the terrain is inland from Dijon and south of Auxerre.

  • Regional park: The region spans parts of four departments in central-eastern France and is designated as a regional natural park, conserving woodland, pastures and small lakes.

What to See #

  • Haut-Folin: The highest point of the Morvan massif, reaching 901 metres and providing marked paths and viewpoints across the surrounding forested hills.
  • Mont Beuvray / Bibracte: An ancient hill site with archaeological remains and museum displays associated with the Gaulish oppidum Bibracte on Mont Beuvray.
