Moray (Inca ruin)
Archaeological Site Circular Inca agricultural terraces used for crop experiments
Near Maras, Moray features concentric Inca terraces that researchers link to agricultural experimentation; tourists tour the sunken rings and pair visits with nearby salt pans.
Moray is an archaeological site in the Sacred Valley of Peru noted for its series of concentric, circular terraces carved into natural depressions. The complex is attributed to the Inca period and is interpreted as a large-scale agricultural laboratory.
A sequence of deep, bowl-shaped terraces arranged in a stepped amphitheatre pattern, where stone retaining walls form rings around descending planting platforms. Paths and viewpoints allow visitors to look down into the depressions and observe the contrast between sun and shaded levels.
The site comprises several such depressions aligned along a ridge; the differences in depth and orientation create a range of temperatures and growing conditions that are visible when walking the rim trails.
Constructed and modified during the Inca era, Moray is generally understood as an experimental agricultural facility where the Incas tested crop varieties and microclimate management. The exact dates of construction are uncertain but the complex is distinctly associated with pre-Hispanic agricultural practices.
Located in the Sacred Valley region near the town of Maras in the Department of Cusco, Moray lies inland from the highlands and is commonly visited on day trips from Cusco or Urubamba.
- Terrace structure: Three main circular amphitheaters are the principal features, each descending in concentric terraces that create distinct microclimates used in agricultural experiments.
What to See #
- Largest depression: The largest of the excavated amphitheatre-like depressions with stepped concentric agricultural terraces used for experimental planting and cultivation trials by the Incas.
- Middle depression: A middle depression aligned with the largest feature, showing similar concentric terraces and stone retaining walls that descend toward a central axis.
- Smallest depression: A smaller, shallower circular terrace complex that demonstrates the same stepped design and microclimate variation seen across the site.
How to Get to Moray (Inca ruin) #
Moray lies in the Sacred Valley near the town of Maras. The usual approach is from Cusco: take a Sacred Valley bus/colectivo or a tour toward Urubamba/Ollantaytambo and ask to be dropped at Maras/Salineras, then follow local signs toward Moray. Driving time from Cusco is generally around 1-2 hours depending on route and stops.
From the parking area at Moray the circular terraces are a short walk-typically 5-15 minutes-down to the viewing areas.
Tips for Visiting Moray (Inca ruin) #
- Go early in the morning to beat the commercial Sacred Valley itineraries and to see the light fall into the concentric terraces clearly; afternoons tend to be busier and windier.
- Combine Moray with the nearby Maras salt ponds on the same trip - most visitors do both, and seeing them together explains why the Incas chose the valley for agricultural experimentation.
- Take time to walk the rim and descend into at least one of the circular terraces; the dramatic depth and microclimate differences are easy to miss if you only view the site from the parking lot.
Best Time to Visit Moray (Inca ruin) #
Visit Moray during the dry season (May-September) for the most reliable weather and best visibility of the agricultural terraces.
