Archaeological Site Ancient Athenian monument marking civic hero names
Located within Athens’ ancient Agora, the Monument of the Eponymous Heroes marked civic functions in classical times. Visitors combine the site with surrounding Agora ruins and archaeological displays.
The Monument of the Eponymous Heroes is a classical-period civic monument in central Athens that marked the bases for the statues of the ten tribal heroes of the city. Its remains are preserved within the archaeological complex near the Roman Agora.
The feature dates to the classical to Hellenistic periods when the eponymous-hero group was used to represent Athens’ tribes and to mark civic functions. Over time the original statues were lost and only the bases and related masonry survive through archaeological excavation.
Located in the historic centre of Athens, the monument sits amid the excavated Agora complex close to the Roman Agora and the Tower of the Winds, within easy walking distance of Monastiraki and the Acropolis.
- On-site ruins: The remains are small and sit among the excavated areas of the Agora, so they are best seen with a visit to the archaeological site rather than from the street.
