The Montreal International Jazz Festival began in 1980 and has since grown into one of the globe’s largest music gatherings, known for mixing major international names with emerging talent. It was founded to showcase jazz in all its forms and to put Montreal on the musical map.

The festival spreads across downtown stages and venues: free outdoor amphitheatres and street stages in the Quartier des Spectacles, plus ticketed evening concerts at indoor halls such as Place des Arts. Expect long street crowds, late-night club sessions, pop-up performances and a cross-genre programme that includes blues, soul, world and experimental music alongside straight-ahead jazz.

The festival takes place in late June into early July, spanning roughly ten days each year and anchored in the start-of-summer weekend. Dates are set on the Gregorian calendar (not by a lunar cycle) and are published well in advance.

The opening weekend is the busiest with headline acts and full outdoor crowds; weekdays bring more daytime club and club-like settings and easier access to seated indoor concerts, while evenings again peak as big names play ticketed venues.

Fly into Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) and take the airport express bus, a taxi or a ride-share to downtown; the festival footprint is within walking distance of several metro stations, including Place-des-Arts and Berri-UQAM. Arrive at least a day before key shows and book accommodation and tickets well ahead, especially for opening weekend.
