Monti Prenestini
Mountains Hilly range east of Rome with ancient towns
East of Rome, the Monti Prenestini hills rise above Palestrina; hikers and history buffs combine woodland walks with visits to the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia and small hilltop towns.
Monti Prenestini is a small mountain range in Lazio, Italy, located to the east of Rome and associated with the town of Palestrina. It forms part of the low hills and subranges on the western flank of the central Apennines and is known for its rural landscapes and historic towns.
The area offers rural hiking, small-scale agritourism and views across the Roman plain rather than high alpine mountaineering. Trails and country roads connect villages and archaeological sites in the foothills, and the landscape is dominated by limestone and cultivated terraces.
The valleys and hilltops around the range have been occupied since antiquity, with the nearby town of Palestrina (ancient Praeneste) one of the region’s main historic centres. Over centuries the hills have supported agriculture, small settlements and defensive sites rather than large urban development.
The range sits immediately east of the city of Rome in the Lazio region, rising from the surrounding lowlands toward the Apennine foothills. Palestrina and other small towns lie within or at the foot of the hills, and the area is effectively a short drive from Rome’s eastern suburbs.
- Access: Lies immediately east of Rome and is closely associated with the town of Palestrina, making it easy to reach as a day trip from the city.
How to Get to Monti Prenestini #
From Rome, take the A24 or the regional roads east toward Palestrina and nearby towns; the Monti Prenestini are within roughly a 45-60 minute drive from Rome’s city centre. Regional buses service some of the larger towns near the range, but a car is the simplest option for reaching trailheads.

- Visit early morning to catch the light on the dolomite outcrops and to avoid roadside traffic noise.
