Monti Cimini
Mountains Volcanic hills in Lazio, known for chestnut woods
West of Viterbo, the volcanic Monti Cimini feature beech woods, Lake Vico and Etruscan and medieval hill towns. Travelers hike chestnut slopes, visit ancient churches and sample local wines and rustic cuisine.
The Monti Cimini are a compact volcanic hill range in northern Lazio, Italy, northwest of Rome and near Viterbo. The range is modest in height but geologically distinct, formed from volcanic activity that left tuff plateaus, cones and a crater lake.
The crater lake Lago di Vico lies within the group and is ringed by woodland trails and viewpoints; higher ground such as Monte Cimino reaches about 1,053 m and offers panoramas over the surrounding countryside. The area supports mixed forest, chestnut groves and short walking routes used by day visitors.
The hills were formed by volcanic activity and later shaped by erosion; human settlement and agriculture have long made use of the more sheltered slopes. Etruscan and Roman archaeological remains are present in the broader region, reflecting long-term habitation.
The Monti Cimini sit northwest of Rome in the Lazio region and are readily reached from Viterbo and nearby towns, forming a natural backdrop to the lowlands of northern Lazio.
