The Montevideo Cabildo is a colonial-era civic building in the Ciudad Vieja (old town) of Montevideo, Uruguay. Its present form dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries and it served as the city’s cabildo or town council.
Now used for public history displays, the building presents period rooms and municipal collections about Montevideo’s colonial and early republican eras. The façade with arcaded balconies is a frequent photographic subject and the site is commonly combined with visits to nearby historic streets and the cathedral.
Constructed to house the municipal council under Spanish rule, it remained an administrative centre through the 19th century and was later adapted for museum and cultural use, with restorations preserving its colonial appearance.
It sits in Ciudad Vieja close to Montevideo’s waterfront and central business district, within easy walking distance of the port and the city’s main historic plazas.
