Monte Viso
Mountain Iconic pyramid-shaped Alpine peak, source of Po
Monviso, the Cottian Alps’ 3,841‑metre peak, marks the Po River’s source at Pian del Re; hikers and climbers pursue ridges and alpine routes for panoramic views of the western Alps.
Monte Viso (Monviso) is a prominent alpine peak in the Cottian Alps of Piedmont, Italy; it rises to 3,841 metres and is a dominant landmark visible from the Po plain.
The mountain presents a nearly pyramidal summit with glaciated ridges and steep faces that attract hikers, scramblers and alpine climbers. Nearby routes and viewpoints offer long-distance views across the Po valley and toward the Maritime Alps, and the short walk to the spring at Pian del Re marks the traditional source of the Po River.
The mountain has long been a landmark for local communities and for historical routes across the Cottian Alps. The first recorded modern ascent is dated to the 19th century and since then the massif has been developed with mountain huts and maintained alpine routes.
The peak sits in southwestern Piedmont close to the French border, above the valleys draining into the plain; the small mountain communities at the foot of the massif (for example Crissolo and nearby mountain huts) are the usual bases for access.
- Elevation: Reaches 3,841 metres above sea level, making it the highest peak of the Cottian Alps.
- Source of the Po: Contains the headwaters of the Po River at Pian del Re, a short walk from the base huts.
- Visiting note: Best climbed and visited in summer months; snow and technical ice persist on higher routes outside June-September.
What to See #
- Pian del Re: A small high-alpine plateau and spring that is recognized as the traditional source of the Po River; popular as a day hike start and photo point for the mountain.
- Rifugio Quintino Sella al Monviso: A staffed mountain hut serving climbers on the southern approach and normal route to the summit; used as a base for acclimatization and overnight stays.
- Summit massif: The main summit ridge and pyramidal peak that dominates views across the Po plain and marks the watershed between Italy and France.
How to Get to Monte Viso #
Monte Viso (Monviso) is approached from the Piedmont side via valley towns such as Crissolo and the Pian del Re parking/starting point (the traditional road access to the Po’s source). Drive from the Cuneo area on regional roads into Valle Po to Crissolo, park at the trailhead (Pian del Re) and continue on foot on established mountain trails; there is no direct public transport to high trailheads so private vehicle or local transfer is usual.
Tips for Visiting Monte Viso #
- Start from Pian del Re (the commonly used parking/approach area near the Po's source) early in the morning for the best light on Monte Viso and to avoid crowding on popular trails.
- If you want the classic pyramid views without a summit ascent, several approach roads and viewpoints around Crissolo and the Monviso Natural Park provide striking panoramas without technical climbing.
- When planning a summit attempt, stage from established mountain huts such as Rifugio Quintino Sella and check local alpine club bulletins for route and condition updates before setting out.
Best Time to Visit Monte Viso #
For Monte Viso, the safest and most accessible period for hiking and climbing is mid-summer (June-September); winter is for experienced mountaineers only.
