Monte Solaro
Mountain Highest point on Capri island with sea views
Monte Solaro crowns the island of Capri; visitors ride the Anacapri chairlift or hike up for sweeping views of the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi coast.
Monte Solaro is the highest point on the island of Capri, located above the town of Anacapri on the island’s western end. The summit is an easily reached viewpoint popular for its sweeping views of the Bay of Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi coast.
A chairlift from Anacapri carries visitors close to the summit; there are also footpaths from Anacapri and from Capri town that are used by walkers. The summit area contains terraces and viewpoints rather than alpine terrain, and it is used primarily for sightseeing rather than technical climbing.
The hill is part of the island’s limestone massif and has long been a destination for visitors seeking panoramic views; modern visitor facilities developed in the 20th century to serve the island’s tourism. The summit sits above Anacapri at the western end of Capri and is the island’s principal high viewpoint.
- Accessibility: Highest point on the island of Capri with a chairlift linking Anacapri to close to the summit, making it easily reachable for visitors.
How to Get to Monte Solaro #
From Naples or Sorrento take a ferry or hydrofoil to Capri’s Marina Grande (ferry crossings from Naples typically take about 40-80 minutes depending on the service). From Marina Grande take the local bus, taxi or the funicular up to Anacapri; the Seggiovia (chairlift) to Monte Solaro departs from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri and takes you close to the summit (the lift ride is about 10-15 minutes). Alternatively you can hike to the summit from Anacapri (roughly 40-60 minutes depending on route and pace).
Tips for Visiting Monte Solaro #
- Take the chairlift from Anacapri to Monte Solaro to reach the main viewpoint quickly; this lets you enjoy the summit views without the crowded boat-timing rush from Capri town.
- Aim for the first lifts or early morning to enjoy quieter vistas and softer light over the Bay of Naples-many visitors arrive only after mid‑morning when day boats swell the crowds.
- After the main belvedere, follow the lesser-used paths east along the ridge toward Punta Carena for a quieter descent and different coastal views that many skip.
Best Time to Visit Monte Solaro #
Best visited in spring or early autumn for pleasant weather and fewer crowds; summer is very busy with many day visitors.
