Monte San Giorgio
Mountain Fossil-rich mountain on Swiss-Italian border, UNESCO site
Straddling the Swiss-Italian border, Monte San Giorgio is famed for Middle Triassic marine fossils; researchers and visitors follow interpretive trails and visit local fossil museums.
Monte San Giorgio is a mountain on the Swiss-Italian border in Ticino renowned for its Middle Triassic fossil deposits. The site is internationally important for exceptionally preserved marine fossils, including fish, reptiles and invertebrates, dating to roughly 240 million years ago.
Paleontological sites and quarries on the mountain have produced thousands of specimens with articulated skeletons and soft-tissue impressions; these finds have been collected and studied since the 19th century. The area includes local museums such as the Meride Fossil Museum where many key specimens are exhibited and interpreted for visitors.
The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 in recognition of its outstanding contribution to understanding Triassic marine ecosystems. Guided walks, museum displays and controlled dig sites convey the scientific importance and allow public engagement with the fossil heritage.
Monte San Giorgio lies in southern Ticino, Switzerland, with access from nearby villages such as Meride; the geological outcrops run along the ridge that forms part of the Swiss-Italian border.
- Age & importance: Contains exceptionally preserved Middle Triassic (about 240 million years old) fossil assemblages that document ancient marine ecosystems and vertebrates.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 for its outstanding fossil preservation and scientific value; many specimens are displayed in local museums.
