Main image

Monte Pascoal National Park is a protected area in the state of Bahia, Brazil, created to conserve the mountain Monte Pascoal and adjacent coastal ecosystems. The park preserves remnants of Atlantic Forest and coastal dune and restinga habitats along the southern Bahia coast.

Trails and viewpoints within the park focus on the mountain and on observing coastal forest and dune environments; it is visited for nature observation and to see the distinctive Monte Pascoal rise from the coastal plain. Visitor infrastructure is limited compared with larger national parks, with access concentrated at a small number of entry points.

Monte Pascoal itself is widely recorded in Brazilian history as the first landform sighted by Portuguese navigators in April 1500, and the park was created in the 20th century to conserve the area’s natural and historical values.

The park lies on the southern coast of Bahia near the Porto Seguro region and the Atlantic shoreline of northeastern Brazil.

  • Protection status: The park was established to protect Monte Pascoal and surrounding Atlantic Forest and coastal ecosystems; it dates from the 20th century.
  • Historical sighting: Monte Pascoal is historically significant as the first landform sighted by the Portuguese fleet under Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500.

What to See #

  • Monte Pascoal: The peak after which the park is named, visible as an isolated hill of higher ground on the coastal plain and historically recorded by early European navigators.
  • Coastal forests and dunes: Lowland Atlantic Forest, coastal restinga and dune systems that form the park's primary protected habitats along Bahia's southern coast.
