Monte Lema is a forested summit in the Swiss canton of Ticino that offers broad panoramic views over the southern Swiss Alps and the nearby lakes. The mountain is a popular day destination for walkers, mountain bikers and paragliders.
A cable car from the village of Miglieglia takes visitors close to the summit station, which has a small restaurant and trailheads; from the top there are clear views toward Lake Maggiore, the Po plain and several high Alpine massifs. Several marked trails of varying difficulty link the summit with surrounding villages and border ridges.
Geologically the mountain is part of the prealpine foothills of Ticino and has long been used for grazing and local forestry before becoming a recreational area with infrastructure to support visitors. Modern tourism infrastructure developed around the mid-20th century with the construction of the lift and summit facilities.
The summit stands in the Swiss canton of Ticino not far from the Italian border, within easy reach of Lugano and the lakes region; the usual access point is the lift from Miglieglia.

How to Get to Monte Lema #
Monte Lema is served by a cable car from the village of Miglieglia (Ticino). Miglieglia is reachable by car from Lugano in roughly 25-35 km (about a 30-40 minute drive depending on route). Regional buses link Lugano with villages in the Malcantone; from Miglieglia the lower cable-car station is a short walk from the village center and the funivia takes you up toward the summit area.
Tips for Visiting Monte Lema #
- Use the Miglieglia-Monte Lema cable car to reach the summit area quickly and conserve energy for ridge walks and viewpoints - the cable car is the standard access for day visits.
- Visit in the late afternoon or early evening when the light stretches over Lake Maggiore and the surrounding ranges and many daytime hikers have descended.
- After the main viewpoint, follow the short marked ridge paths (toward Monte Tamaro) for quieter panoramas-many day-trippers don't continue beyond the immediate summit area.
