Monte Generoso is a mountain on the border between Switzerland and Italy in the canton of Ticino, rising to a prominent summit above Lake Lugano. It is a well-known regional landmark with established visitor facilities and an historic scenic railway.
The summit area offers broad panoramic views across Lake Lugano, the surrounding Alps and, on clear days, the Po Valley; the summit viewpoint and terraces accommodate visitors. Many reach the top aboard the historic rack railway from Capolago, which shortens the ascent and runs on a scheduled timetable.
The mountain has been developed for tourism since the late 19th century when the railway and visitor infrastructure were established; the current summit building known as the Fiore di Pietra was designed by Mario Botta and opened in 2017. Over time the site evolved from a natural lookout to a managed visitor destination with paths and services.
The peak sits on the ridge separating the Lugano basin from the Val d’Intelvi, with the main Swiss access from Capolago on Lake Lugano. The nearest sizable towns are Lugano and Mendrisio in Ticino.
