Monte d'Accoddi Museum

Monte d’Accoddi is a prehistoric stone monument on northwestern Sardinia consisting of a raised, stepped platform interpreted as an altar or ceremonial structure. It is one of the island’s most distinctive Neolithic-Bronze Age monuments.

The monument’s unusual stepped shape and substantial limestone construction make it unique in Sardinia; archaeologists interpret it as a focus for ritual activity. The site dates to roughly the 4th or 3rd millennium BCE and shows use through later prehistoric periods.

Excavations and study in the 20th century revealed structural phases and material culture linking the monument to regional Neolithic and Bronze Age communities.

Monte d’Accoddi stands on the northwest side of Sardinia, inland from the Gulf of Asinara and within reach of the urban centers of northern Sardinia.

Monte d’Accoddi lies in northern Sardinia near the town of Sassari and the port of Porto Torres. From Sassari, take the SS131bis toward Porto Torres and follow local roads (SP) toward the small village signs for Monte d’Accoddi-expect a 20-30 minute drive. The site is best reached by car; local buses may serve nearby towns but require walking.

• Arrive with sturdy walking shoes-the site sits on a low ridge and paths can be rocky after rain.
• Bring binoculars: from the top of the monument the surrounding plain and the mosaic of olive groves make clear why early communities chose this high, ceremonial place.
• Combine the visit with the nearby Nuraghe Santu Antine and the archaeological museums of Sassari or Porto Torres for context on Sardinia's prehistoric architecture.
