Monte Bolca

Monte Bolca is a fossil-rich site in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy near the village of Bolca, renowned for exceptionally preserved Eocene marine fossils. The deposits are famous for articulated fish specimens and associated marine organisms preserved in limestone.

The fossil-bearing limestone beds have yielded large numbers of fish species as well as invertebrates and plant remains that together provide a detailed window into a shallow tropical marine ecosystem of the Early to Middle Eocene. Fossils were extracted from quarry exposures and have been collected by naturalists and palaeontologists for centuries.

Scientific study of the Monte Bolca material established it as one of the key European lagerstatten for Eocene marine life, and specimens from the site appear in multiple museum collections. The locality is primarily of palaeontological interest rather than a developed tourist attraction.

Monte Bolca lies in the province of Verona in Veneto, positioned inland from the Adriatic coast in northeastern Italy near the Lessini area and the small settlements around Bolca.
