Montagne Sainte-Victoire

Montagne Sainte-Victoire is a limestone ridge east of Aix-en-Provence in southern France, rising to 1,011 metres at its highest point. It is a regional landmark famed for its distinctive profile and for being a repeated subject in the paintings of Paul Cézanne.

The massif offers a network of marked hiking and climbing routes, rock faces used for sport climbing and several panoramic viewpoints that look over the Aix plain and toward the Mediterranean on clear days. Vegetation is typical Mediterranean scrub and oak woods at lower elevations.

Historically the mountain has been quarried and traversed since antiquity; it became widely known in the modern era because of Cézanne’s work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area’s access and trail development have expanded for recreational use since the mid-20th century.

The ridge lies a short drive east of the city of Aix-en-Provence in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region; local towns and parking areas serve as trailheads for the various routes up to the summit ridge.

• Best time for views: Trails and routes of varying difficulty cross the limestone ridge; morning and late-afternoon light are prized for views and photography, particularly from the Pic des Mouches and the Croix de Provence areas.

• Pic des Mouches (summit): The highest point, Pic des Mouches, reaches 1,011 metres and is the principal viewpoint used by hikers and painters alike.
• Croix de Provence: A prominent metal cross placed along the ridge known as the Croix de Provence is a common reference point and viewing spot for visitors approaching from Aix.
