Montagne Noire
Mountains Southern French mountain range, part of the Massif Central
A wooded ridge in southern France, Montagne Noire draws hikers and mountain bikers to marked trails, small Occitan villages, and local churches; visit for forested panoramas, quiet country roads and seasonal foraging or birdwatching.
The Montagne Noire is a compact mountain range at the southwestern end of the Massif Central in southern France, with its highest point at Pic de Nore (1,211 metres). It is known regionally for its forested slopes and local outdoor recreation.
Hiking and mountain-biking routes traverse wooded ridges and valleys; Pic de Nore provides panoramic views and seasonal outdoor activities, including a small ski area and an antenna tower at the summit. Trails and rural roads connect scattered villages and lookouts rather than large visitor centres.
Geologically it forms the southern margin of the Massif Central and takes its name from the dense forests that historically made its slopes appear dark. Human use has traditionally been rural and recreational rather than urban or industrial.
The range lies in southern France within the Occitania administrative region, occupying parts of the departments around the Aude and Tarn areas and rising above the surrounding lowlands.
