Montafon
Valley Austrian alpine valley renowned for skiing and hiking
Montafon in Vorarlberg is an Alpine valley of ski resorts, hiking trails, cable cars and mountain villages; visitors arrive for winter sports, summer walking routes and alpine hut culture.
Montafon is an alpine valley region in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, characterised by mountain resorts, valleys and access to surrounding high peaks. The valley is a regional centre for winter sports, summer hiking and alpine tourism.
Major infrastructure includes interconnected lift systems and groomed pistes in the Silvretta Montafon ski area, plus gondolas and mountain huts that provide access to high alpine terrain. In summer the same lift networks and marked trails serve hikers, mountain bikers and climbers who use the valley as a base for multi‑day tours.
Historically the valley developed as a series of Walser settlements and later expanded its tourist infrastructure in the 20th century as skiing and mountain recreation grew in importance. Local communities maintain traditional alpine architecture alongside modern resort facilities.
Montafon sits in western Austria, branching south from the town of Bludenz into the Silvretta and Rätikon ranges, with valley villages connected by regional roads and public transport to the Vorarlberg road and rail network.
- Year‑round alpine activities: The Montafon valley runs from the market town of Bludenz into the Silvretta mountains and provides year‑round outdoor activities, including extensive ski terrain in winter and marked alpine hiking routes in summer.
What to See #
- Silvretta Montafon ski area: Silvretta Montafon is the largest ski area in the valley, served by multiple cable cars and gondolas and offering alpine pistes and lift access across the Silvretta range.
- Base towns and villages: The principal valley towns such as Schruns and Gaschurn act as base centres with accommodation, transport links and local services for both winter and summer visitors.
How to Get to Montafon #
By rail+road: Montafon is the valley region in Vorarlberg centered on villages such as Schruns and Tschagguns. Take regional ÖBB trains to Bludenz (the nearest rail hub) and then continue by regional bus or car into the Montafon valley. The drive from Bludenz into the main Montafon valley villages is on the Montafoner Straße (regional road) and typically takes about 20-30 minutes by car.
If you’re coming from further afield, rail to Bludenz is the usual approach; local bus services (Postbus/regional lines) run from Bludenz up the valley to the resorts and trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Montafon #
- Visit in the season that matches your plans: December-March for skiing and June-September for hiking and alpine trails - lift and trail operations are seasonal, so check current opening dates before traveling.
- Base yourself in Schruns or Tschagguns to access the main lift networks and local bus links; those towns serve as the practical hub for Montafon activities.
- Avoid weekend peak crowds at the most popular cable cars by riding first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon; mid‑week days are noticeably quieter on both slopes and hiking trails.
- What many visitors miss: explore some of the smaller valleys (for example Gargellen or the Golm area) and local alpine huts for quieter trails and authentic mountain hospitality away from the main resorts.
Best Time to Visit Montafon #
Go in winter for skiing (Dec-Mar) and in summer (June-Sep) for hiking and mountain activities - choose based on the season you prefer.
