Mont Vélan is a mountain in the Pennine Alps on the border area between Switzerland and Italy, notable as a prominent summit overlooking the Valais region. It rises well above the surrounding valleys and forms part of the alpine skyline south of the Great St Bernard Pass.
The mountain has glaciated slopes and has been the object of mountaineering routes since the 18th and 19th centuries; it is approached from alpine valleys and serves as a local highpoint for climbers rather than as a mass tourist destination.
Geographically it occupies a position in the western Alps within the canton of Valais on the Swiss side and the Aosta/Italian side to the south, overlooking mixed alpine pastures and high mountain terrain.
