Mont Sainte-Odile
Mountain Mountain monastery and pilgrimage site in Alsace
Mont Sainte-Odile in Alsace hosts a hilltop abbey with cloisters and pilgrimage history. Visitors hike woodland trails, visit chapels and take views over the Rhine plain from this Vosges ridge.
Mont Sainte-Odile is a wooded mountain ridge and pilgrimage site in the Vosges mountains of Alsace, France, with a summit at 764 metres above sea level. It is centred on a monastery complex associated with Saint Odile and has been an important regional pilgrimage site since the early medieval period.
The principal attraction is the Hohenbourg Abbey complex - a pilgrimage church, associated chapels and the shrine of Saint Odile - set on a terrace that gives long views across the Alsace plain and the Rhine Valley. The abbey terrace and adjacent viewpoints are the main vantage points for photographs and panoramas.
The ridge is also crossed by the notable stone enclosure known as the Mur Païen, visible along the plateau for about 10 kilometres and forming a striking linear feature in the landscape. Walks through the surrounding forested slopes and short circuits linking the abbey, viewpoints and archaeological traces are the typical visitor activities.
The site is associated with Saint Odile (7th to 8th century), around whose monastery the abbey complex developed; the present abbey buildings include structures and restorations from the 19th century onward. The Mur Païen is an ancient boundary or enclosure with uncertain origin that has been a visible feature of the ridge for centuries.
Mont Sainte-Odile sits on a ridge of the Vosges in the Grand Est region of France, above the Alsace plain. It is a short drive from the small towns on the foothills of the Vosges and lies within the historic Alsace region, roughly 30 kilometres from the city of Strasbourg.
- Visiting tips: Best light for views is in the morning and late afternoon when the low sun highlights the Alsace plain; the site is busy on Catholic feast days and weekends.
- Elevation: The abbey sits at 764 metres above sea level, so expect cooler temperatures and rapid weather changes compared with the plain below.

- Mur Païen (Pagan Wall): A stone continuity wall running along the ridge whose visible length is commonly described as about 10 kilometres and which crosses the Mont Sainte-Odile plateau; its origin is ancient and the feature is a prominent landscape element.
- Main viewpoint / terrace: A paved terrace and viewpoint immediately adjacent to the abbey that provides panoramic views across the Alsace plain to the Rhine and Vosges foothills; popular photo spot and the main orientation point for visitors.
