Mont Bégo
Mountain Alpine peak in Mercantour known for prehistoric petroglyphs
Granite massif in the Mercantour with Bronze Age petroglyphs in the Vallée des Merveilles; hikers and archaeology enthusiasts follow marked trails to see rock carvings.
Mont Bégo is a prominent peak in the Maritime Alps in southeastern France, rising to roughly 2,872 metres and known for its archaeological significance rather than alpine tourism alone. The mountain and its surrounding valleys are important for prehistoric rock art.
The main attraction in the area is the nearby Vallée des Merveilles, where thousands of Bronze Age petroglyphs are engraved on exposed rock surfaces across the high-altitude plateau. Hikers use marked trails to view the engravings and the mountain’s rocky landscape during the summer season.
The engravings are prehistoric and are generally attributed to Bronze Age pastoral and ritual activity; they form one of the most important concentrations of rock art in Western Europe. The mountain and valley are managed as part of the Mercantour/Parc national area with conservation measures in place.
Mont Bégo stands on the border area between France and Italy in the Alpes-Maritimes department, within the high alpine environment of the Maritime Alps and accessible from valley towns and mountain trailheads.
- Protected archaeological area: The mountain and its surrounding valleys are within a protected area; the Vallée des Merveilles contains thousands of Bronze Age rock engravings and is accessible to walkers on marked routes in summer.
