Moni Varlaam

Moni Varlaam is one of the Meteora monasteries in Thessaly, Greece, situated atop a tall sandstone pillar near the town of Kalambaka. It is among the larger Meteora foundations and is known for its elevated position and preserved ecclesiastical buildings.

The complex includes the main katholikon (church), monastic cells and small exhibition spaces displaying icons and ecclesiastical objects; visitors also gain panoramic views over the Thessalian plain. Access involves climbing a stone stairway and bridge that connect the monastery to the surrounding rock.

The site originated as part of the ascetic and monastic developments at Meteora from the late Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods and was built up by monastic communities over several centuries. It remains an active or semi-active religious site and a cultural monument.

Varlaam sits among the clustered sandstone pillars of Meteora, immediately above the plain near Kalambaka in the Trikala regional unit of Thessaly; it is reachable from the town by short road and foot accesses.
