Monfragüe
Park Protected natural park in Extremadura with raptor colonies
A national park in Extremadura known for river canyons and cliff-top raptors; birdwatchers and hikers come for griffon vulture colonies, marked trails and views from medieval fortress ruins.
Monfragüe is a protected natural area in the Extremadura region of western Spain, noted for its concentration of breeding raptors and riverine gorges. It was designated a national-level protected area in the 21st century and is a key conservation area in the province of Cáceres.
The park is known for its cliff-side roosts and viewing points where large numbers of griffon vultures, black vultures, booted eagles and black storks can be seen. Popular observation spots include a castle ruin set on a prominent rock above the river and several miradores that overlook the Tagus gorge. Trails and short walks connect viewpoints, picnic areas and the visitor facilities around Villarreal de San Carlos.
Monfragüe was long used locally for grazing and small-scale agriculture before formal protection; later conservation measures focused on protecting raptor nesting sites and riparian habitats. Over recent decades it has moved from regional protection to national park status and now combines conservation with regulated wildlife tourism.
The area sits in the central-western Spanish plateau within the province of Cáceres, along the Tagus river and its tributaries. The main access points are small towns and visitor facilities within the park; larger cities in the region provide the nearest services and transport links.
