Monastery of San Millán de Yuso

The Monastery of San Millán de Yuso is a historic monastic complex in San Millán de la Cogolla, La Rioja, Spain, forming part of a two-site World Heritage inscription with the nearby Suso monastery. The site is closely associated with early written examples of the Spanish language and medieval Iberian monasticism.

The lower Yuso monastery presents a sizable complex of church spaces, cloisters and a library largely rebuilt from the 16th century onward, with ornate ecclesiastical interiors and choir stalls. The adjacent Suso site preserves earlier medieval and hermitages, and is the location where the Glosas Emilianenses - marginal glosses that include early Romance words - were recorded.

A monastic community established at San Millán has medieval origins and developed over many centuries, with Yuso expanded and rebuilt during the early modern period while Suso retains older fabric. The two sites together served religious, cultural and scriptorial roles throughout the Middle Ages and into the early modern era.

Both monasteries stand in the village of San Millán de la Cogolla in La Rioja, in a rural valley of northern Spain, accessible by road from Logroño and nearby towns in the region.
