The Monastery of San Millán de Suso is an early medieval monastic site in La Rioja, Spain, notable for its very early written texts in the Iberian Peninsula. The upper monastery (Suso) is smaller and older than the adjacent Yuso complex and retains early medieval architecture.
Suso contains rock-cut hermitages and a sequence of small chapels and churches built on and around a natural outcrop; its library and scriptoria produced manuscripts and marginalia of linguistic importance. The site is widely cited for the Glosas Emilianenses, glosses that record early forms of Romance language alongside Latin.
Founded around the hermitage of Saint Emilian, the complex developed over many centuries and was later supplemented by the larger Monastery of San Millán de Yuso at lower elevation. Suso’s architecture preserves pre-Romanesque and Mozarabic features alongside later medieval additions.
The monastery is located in the municipality of San Millán de la Cogolla in La Rioja, set in a rural landscape of vineyards and low hills.
