Monastery of Saint John the Theologian
Religious Site Orthodox monastery on Patmos, historic pilgrimage site
Byzantine monastery on Patmos founded in the 11th century, housing icons, relics and a museum. Pilgrims and cultural tourists visit for Orthodox liturgy, frescoes and island views.
Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on Patmos is a fortified Byzantine monastery established in 1088 and centered on a large katholikon and defensive walls. It is a major religious and historical site on the island and holds a long-standing monastic library and treasury of icons.
The complex contains cloisters, monks’ cells, chapels and a museum-like library with manuscripts and ecclesiastical objects; its position above the town provides views toward the port of Skala. Pilgrims and visitors commonly combine a visit to the monastery with the nearby Cave of the Apocalypse, which is traditionally associated with John’s visions.
Founded by the monk Christodoulos in the late 11th century, the monastery grew as both a spiritual center and defensive refuge through the medieval and Ottoman periods, preserving manuscripts and icons that document its long religious role. Restoration and conservation work over the 19th and 20th centuries have maintained its structural and cultural heritage.
The monastery stands high above the main harbour settlement on the island of Patmos in the North Aegean, within short distance of Skala; the island is reached by ferry from nearby Dodecanese islands and mainland ports.
- Founding: Founded in 1088, the complex remains an active Greek Orthodox monastery and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation for Patmos.
