Monastery of Carboeiro

The Monastery of Carboeiro (Mosteiro do Carboeiro) is a medieval monastic complex in Galicia, northwest Spain, with surviving Romanesque and Gothic fabric dating from the medieval period.

The site includes a stone church with a pronounced eastern apse and the ruins of cloistered monastic buildings that illustrate medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Galicia. The complex sits in a rural valley and is approached by minor roads; visits are typically brief and focused on the architectural remains and surrounding landscape.

Founded in the medieval period with major surviving elements from the Romanesque and Gothic phases, the monastery served as a religious house and local landholding across the Middle Ages. It later declined and fell into partial ruin, with conservation and restoration efforts in modern times stabilizing key structures.

The monastery lies in inland Galicia, in the province of Pontevedra, within driving distance of small towns such as Lalín and about 60-80 kilometres from the regional city of Santiago de Compostela depending on route.
