Monastery and Site of the Escurial, Madrid

The Monastery and Site of the Escurial (San Lorenzo de El Escorial) is a large 16th-century royal monastery and palace complex northwest of Madrid, built under King Philip II between 1563 and 1584 and noted for its scale and austere Renaissance-Herreran architecture.

Commissioned by Philip II in the mid-16th century, the complex was designed to serve as a monastery, royal palace and burial place for the Habsburg and later Bourbon dynasties. It was constructed under architects Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera and remained a royal site and religious house through successive centuries.
