The area has long been recognised for its cave systems and speleological importance; protection measures were introduced to conserve caves, their formations and resident species and to manage visitor access. Caves in the park have been used as showcaves for many decades.
Located in north-central Tasmania at the eastern edge of the Great Western Tiers, the park lies adjacent to the settlement of Mole Creek and is accessible from regional centres in northern Tasmania.

Mole Creek sits about an hour’s drive west of Launceston on the Tasman Highway/A1 and then the B12. The park is best reached by car; a limited number of local operators run guided tours and shuttles from Launceston.
