Moissac Abbey

Moissac Abbey (Abbaye Saint-Pierre) is a Benedictine abbey in Moissac, Occitanie, in southern France, renowned for its Romanesque sculpture and an important medieval pilgrimage site. Major surviving fabric dates to the 11th and 12th centuries.

The site’s principal attractions are the Romanesque cloister with its large ensemble of carved capitals and the abbey church’s sculpted portal and tympanum depicting Christ in Majesty and Last Judgment iconography. These elements are studied as major works of medieval European art.

The abbey has early medieval origins and underwent extensive reconstruction and decoration in the 11th-12th centuries under Benedictine occupation. Over time it became a major monastic centre and a waypoint for pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela.

Located in the town of Moissac on the banks of the Tarn River in southwestern France’s Occitanie region, the abbey is accessible from regional towns and lies within a landscape of historic waterways and agricultural land.
