Archaeological Site Rapa Nui stone statues scattered across volcanic island

On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), moai statues stand on ahu platforms across the island within Rapa Nui National Park. Visitors come for Polynesian archaeology, restored stone platforms, coastal views and festivals in Hanga Roa.

Main image

The Moai are the monumental carved stone statues created by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Chile, and are emblematic of the island’s Polynesian culture. Hundreds of these monolithic figures and their stone platforms form the core of Rapa Nui National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Clusters of moai stand on coastal ahu platforms and in and around the quarry at Rano Raraku, where most statues were carved from volcanic tuff; many moai were toppled by past conflicts and later restored on platforms such as Ahu Tongariki. The scale ranges from smaller finished figures to the largest incomplete statues at the quarry, and guided circuits cover key ahu, quarry slopes and archaeological displays.

Interpretive trails and museum displays in Hanga Roa explain carving techniques, island society and recent conservation-restoration work; several restored sites offer close views of carved faces, hatstones and platform structures. Ahu Tongariki, with 15 re-erected moai, is one of the most visited photographic subjects and was reassembled in a major project after damage from a 1960s tsunami.

The moai were carved by islanders between about 1250 and 1500 CE using local volcanic tuff, and they were transported and erected on stone platforms for ancestor veneration and social display. European contact, ecological changes and later events caused toppled statues and cultural disruption; 20th-century archaeological work and conservation have stabilised and, in some cases, re-erected moai.

The statues are distributed across Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, a Chilean territory approximately 3,700 kilometres west of mainland Chile; the main settlement is Hanga Roa on the island’s southwestern coast.

  • Number and date range: Around 887 moai have been recorded across Rapa Nui, carved and erected by the island's Polynesian inhabitants between roughly 1250 and 1500 CE.
  • Remoteness and access: The island is remote - Rapa Nui (Easter Island) lies roughly 3,700 kilometres west of mainland Chile; the main settlement and visitor services are concentrated in Hanga Roa.

What to See #

  • Ahu Tongariki: Ahu Tongariki is the largest restored ahu (ceremonial platform) on the island, with a line of 15 restored moai re-erected after a tsunami and restoration campaign.
  • Rano Raraku quarry: Rano Raraku is the volcanic quarry where the majority of moai were carved; many unfinished statues remain in various stages of completion across the quarry slopes.
  • Ahu Akivi: Ahu Akivi is a distinctive inland platform of seven moai aligned to astronomical observations and set away from the coastal concentration of statues.

How to Get to Moai #

The moai on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are reached via the island town of Hanga Roa. Flights land at Mataveri Airport (IPC) on the west side of the island; Mataveri is about 5 km from Hanga Roa (roughly a 10-15 minute drive).

From Hanga Roa most major moai sites (Ahu Tongariki, Ahu Akivi, Rano Raraku, etc.) are reached by rental car, bike, organized day tours or local taxis via the island’s ring road - sites are generally a short drive (up to an hour) from Hanga Roa depending on location.

Tips for Visiting Moai #

  • Buy the Rapa Nui National Park ticket at the park office in Hanga Roa before visiting sites - the single park pass is required at major sites such as Rano Raraku and Orongo and is checked on entry.
  • Visit Rano Raraku (the quarry) early in the morning when light is best and crowds are smallest - this is where hundreds of moai remain in situ and offers a very different perspective from the rebuilt ahu.
  • For classic photography, go to Ahu Tongariki at sunrise; for fewer people and atmospheric light head to Ahu Tahai around sunset, but expect evening visitors in high season.
  • Don't confine yourself to the coastal ahu: take time to walk the interior paths and Hanga Roa's small museum (Museo Antropológico Sebastian Englert) to pick up context that many day visitors miss.

Best Time to Visit Moai #

Visit in the shoulder seasons (April-June or September-November) to avoid the biggest crowds while enjoying warm, stable weather.

Shoulder seasons (best times)
April-June & September-November · ~20-26°C
Milder temperatures, fewer visitors than mid‑summer, and generally good conditions for exploring archaeological sites and the coast.
High season
December-February · ~22-28°C
Warm to hot with the highest visitor numbers and busiest services; expect more crowds at major moai sites.
Rainier/wet months
November-March · ~22-28°C
Warm but with an increased chance of showers and short heavy rain; island activities continue but weather can be changeable.
