Island Wooded Adriatic island with national park and lakes
Mljet island contains Mljet National Park with salt lakes Veliko and Malo Jezero and a 12th‑century monastery on St. Mary islet. Visitors kayak, bike forest trails and stay in quiet villages beside pine‑lined shores.
Mljet is an island in the Dubrovnik-Neretva archipelago noted for its wooded interior, saltwater lakes and coastal scenery. The island’s western shore contains two closely linked lakes and a small medieval monastery on an islet, which form the focal point for visitors.
The two lakes, Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero, are linked to the sea and fringed by forested walking paths and viewpoints; a Benedictine monastery stands on a lake islet and is reached by short boat trips. The island includes villages and stretches of quieter coastline beyond the lakes, with walking, cycling and boating as common activities.
Mljet’s protected western area preserves its natural and cultural landscape and is managed to allow visitor access while conserving habitats and historical structures. The island is reached by ferry services from the mainland and nearby islands.
- National Park: Parts of the island's western lakes area are protected as a national park and access is managed to balance visitor use with conservation of the lakes and surrounding forest.

- Veliko and Malo Jezero: Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero are two adjoining saltwater lakes on the island's western side connected to the sea and surrounded by pine forest and walking trails.
