Mittelbau-Dora was a Nazi concentration and forced labour complex near Nordhausen in Thuringia, established in 1943 during World War II. It was created to provide prisoner labour for the nearby underground Mittelwerk factories that manufactured V-2 rockets and other armaments.
Today the site is preserved as a memorial and documentation centre with exhibitions detailing the camp system, the prisoners’ fate, and the connection to the Mittelwerk tunnels. Visitors encounter preserved foundations, interpretive displays and archived testimony.
The camp began as a satellite facility and grew into an extensive system of subcamps and production-linked labour sites; conditions and forced labour caused very high mortality among prisoners.
