Misti is a symmetrical stratovolcano that overlooks the city of Arequipa in southern Peru, with an elevation of about 5,822 metres. It is one of the region’s most recognisable landmarks and is visible from the urban centre.

Allow proper acclimatization in Arequipa before attempting Misti-the summit is high (over 5,800 m) and altitude, not technical difficulty, is the main risk for visitors.
Hire a reputable local guide and pre-book logistics (guide, mule/porter or refugio where applicable); rescue and evacuation are complicated and local operators know the safest routes and timing.
If you're aiming for the summit, begin the hardest part of the ascent from the highest base camp/refugio just after midnight to avoid afternoon wind and to benefit from firmer snow and ice in the early morning.
