Misti
Volcano Stratovolcano overlooking Arequipa, prominent city landmark
Misti rises over Arequipa as a symmetrical stratovolcano with a prominent cone. Climbers and day‑hikers use established routes for sunrise views across the white‑washed city; guides and acclimatisation are standard.
Misti is a symmetrical stratovolcano that overlooks the city of Arequipa in southern Peru, with an elevation of about 5,822 metres. It is one of the region’s most recognisable landmarks and is visible from the urban centre.
Climbers and trekkers visit Misti for high-altitude ascents and panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape and Arequipa. Routes climb from base camps on its flanks and offer non-technical to moderate alpine challenges depending on the line chosen.
Misti sits immediately north of the city of Arequipa in the Department of Arequipa; the volcano is a short drive from the city and dominates local vistas.
- Skyline landmark: Prominent and symmetrical, it forms the iconic backdrop to the city of Arequipa and is a common objective for acclimatization and alpine climbs.
Tips for Visiting Misti #
- Plan climbs and treks in the dry season (roughly May-September) and start summit pushes very late at night so you reach the final slopes and the summit around sunrise when conditions are often most stable.
- Allow proper acclimatization in Arequipa before attempting Misti-the summit is high (over 5,800 m) and altitude, not technical difficulty, is the main risk for visitors.
- Hire a reputable local guide and pre-book logistics (guide, mule/porter or refugio where applicable); rescue and evacuation are complicated and local operators know the safest routes and timing.
- If you're aiming for the summit, begin the hardest part of the ascent from the highest base camp/refugio just after midnight to avoid afternoon wind and to benefit from firmer snow and ice in the early morning.
Best Time to Visit Misti #
For clear views from Arequipa and safer climbing conditions on Misti, visit in the dry season (May-September).
