Metropol Parasol

Metropol Parasol is a large timber and concrete canopy structure in Seville’s Plaza de la Encarnacif3n, designed by German architect Jfcrgen Mayer and completed in 2011. It is widely known locally as “Las Setas” and is notable as a major contemporary intervention in the historic centre.

The complex contains a shaded public plaza and an elevated walkway and terrace that offer panoramic views across Seville. Beneath the canopy is a covered market serving local vendors, and the basement houses the Antiquarium, an archaeological display of Roman and Moorish remains found during construction.

The project required significant archaeological work during construction, which led to the creation of the on-site Antiquarium to display finds. The structure functions as an urban meeting space, market hall, and viewpoint in the heart of Seville’s old town.

Located in the Plaza de la Encarnacif3n in central Seville, the parasol sits in the historic core of Andalusia’s provincial capital and is within easy walking distance of the cathedral and main tourist routes.

• Scale: The parasol canopy spans an area roughly on the order of 150 by 70 metres and rises to around 26 metres above the plaza, creating a shaded public space below and a panoramic terrace above.

• Mirador / rooftop walkway: A shaded elevated walkway and terrace that gives panoramic views across central Seville and the cathedral area; the rooftop path is the main viewpoint for city panoramas.
• Mercado de la Encarnacif3n: A ground-floor market occupying the plaza beneath the parasol structure, serving stalls and local traders in a modern covered market space.
• Antiquarium: An on-site archaeological display in the basement that exhibits Roman and Moorish remains uncovered during construction, open to visitors as the Antiquarium.
