Melilla la Vieja

Melilla la Vieja is the historic fortified quarter of Melilla, the Spanish enclave on the North African coast. It comprises walled bastions, ramparts and a compact old town that preserves military and colonial-era structures.

The area is defined by defensive walls, bastions and promenades that run along the sea-facing cliffs, interspersed with narrow streets, small squares and a handful of historic civic and military buildings. Walkable ramparts provide viewpoints over the harbour and across to the Moroccan coastline.

Museums and interpretive displays within the old town explain the fortifications and the city’s maritime role, and visitors commonly combine a visit with a walk through Melilla’s more modern districts. The compact site is suitable for short on-foot visits and photography.

The fortified citadel reflects successive phases of Spanish control from the late 15th century onward and was adapted and rebuilt over centuries to meet changing military needs. Many of the visible walls and bastions date to early modern and 19th-century fortification work under Spanish administration.

Melilla la Vieja sits on a headland beside Melilla’s main harbour on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, immediately adjacent to the modern city. The enclave borders Moroccan territory on the landward side.
